The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team jumped to an early lead in each set as it swept Morton 25-11, 25-20, 27-25 on Friday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
Freshman Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) had five kills on eight attacks and added three blocks for the Chargers (3-1), who never trailed in the match. Carley Reeves-Eakins posted a team-high 14 kills for Sandburg.
The Chargers raced to a 7-0 lead behind the service of Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) to cruise to a first-set victory. Sandburg had a 9-3 advantage to start the second before the Panthers (2-7) came back to force ties at 12, 13, 15, 16, 18 and 19. The Chargers then closed with a 6-1 stretch, keyed by a pair of Reeves-Eakins kills.
A Johnson block gave Sandburg an 8-3 lead in the third, but Morton rallied to tie later in the set. Morton held off three Chargers match points at 24-21 and another at 25-24, but a Johnson kill helped set up Sandburg’s fifth and final match point.
Chiaravalle handed out 19 assists and had five kills from the setter position. Sophomore libero Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) had 18 digs and two aces for the Chargers.
